Overview

A new lawn starts with the soil under it

Sod arrives looking perfect, which is exactly why it gets laid over bad ground so often. Roll it across compacted fill, old weeds and a yard that tips toward the house, and it greens up for a few weeks before the seams brown, the low spots puddle and the roots never go deeper than an inch.

Our job is the half day of work before the first roll comes off the pallet. We strip the tired lawn, cut down high spots and fill hollows so rain runs away from the foundation, then spread screened topsoil and rake it level. The sod goes on fresh, ideally within a day of being cut at the farm, with every seam pushed tight and staggered like brickwork, and edges trimmed cleanly against walks and beds. Most Ontario sod is a Kentucky bluegrass blend, which knits fast in sun and handles winter well.

How we do it

  1. Remove the old lawn

Old turf, weeds and debris come out so new roots grow into clean soil.

  2. Grade for drainage

We slope the ground away from the house and fill low spots that would hold water.

  3. Screened topsoil

A layer of screened topsoil gives the new sod a loose, fertile bed to root into.

  4. Lay and roll

Fresh-cut rolls are laid tight with staggered seams, cut to edges, then rolled for full soil contact.

The best months to lay sod in southern Ontario

Sod can go down any time the ground isn't frozen, but some windows are easier than others. Late April through June gives cool nights and regular rain, so the roots establish quickly with little extra watering. Late August through October is just as good, and often better: the soil is still warm, the air is cooler, and weeds are slowing down for the year.

Mid-summer installs work too, they just need more water and attention through heat waves, because sod on a hot day loses moisture fast. We check the forecast before scheduling and avoid laying on days of extreme heat where we can. Late-fall sod laid a few weeks before freeze-up usually roots enough to survive winter and comes back strong in spring. If you're unsure whether this week is a good one, our lawn weather forecast rates each day for sod in your town.

Your first month with new sod

Week one: water deeply every day, enough that the soil under the sod is moist when you lift a corner. Morning watering loses less to evaporation than midday. Weeks two and three: once a gentle tug no longer lifts the sod, cut back to every second or third day but water longer, so roots chase the moisture down. First cut: usually around two to three weeks in, once it's rooted, with a sharp blade set high so you only take off the top third.

Keep pets and kids off as much as you can until it's rooted, and hold off on any heavy fertilizing for the first few weeks. Brown seams almost always mean those edges dried out, so give them a little extra water. If a patch stays yellow and lifts easily after two weeks, it hasn't rooted, and that's usually a watering issue rather than bad sod.

How we build it

The details that make it last.

Prep first

Grading and topsoil before a single roll goes down.

Drains the right way

Sloped away from the house, never toward it.

Tight, staggered seams

So it knits together and doesn't show every joint.

Aftercare plan

A watering schedule and first-cut timing so it takes.

FAQ

New sod: what homeowners ask

How much does sod installation cost?

It depends on size, site and materials. Typical GTA projects run around $2–$4 per sq ft installed. Includes old-lawn removal, grading and topsoil on most lots. We give you an exact written quote after a free site visit.

When can I walk on new sod?

Keep traffic light for about two weeks, until the roots grip and the sod won't lift at a corner.

Sod or seed?

Sod gives a finished lawn immediately and resists erosion on slopes. Seed is cheaper but takes a season to fill in.

How soon should new sod be watered?

Right away. Water daily for the first one to two weeks so the soil underneath stays moist, then taper off.

Can you sod in summer?

Yes, as long as it is watered well. Spring and fall are easier because there is less heat stress.

Can sod go down over my existing lawn?

It shouldn't. Laying over old grass leaves a layer of thatch and roots between the new sod and the soil, so it dries out and roots poorly. We remove the old turf first.

Does sod grow in shade?

Standard bluegrass sod wants at least four to six hours of sun. In heavier shade it thins over a season or two, so we may suggest a shade-tolerant seed mix or a planted bed instead of sod under big trees.
