Sheridan driveways, built for 1960s to 1990s lots

An interlocking driveway in Sheridan, Mississauga, is a paver surface laid over a dug-out, compacted stone base. You get a written, itemized quote, and the same crew builds to it.

Sheridan sits roughly between the QEW and Dundas Street, with Oakville on its western edge. The neighbourhood guide describes mostly brick homes built in the 1960s to the 1990s (Neighbourhood Guide). Lots are wide and double garages are common. Homes are split-levels, ranch bungalows, townhomes and newer infill. That mix shapes the driveway: a double garage wants a double-wide surface, and a split-level wants a clean run to a short flight of steps.

The area was once the village of Hammondsville, renamed Sheridan in 1857 and centred at Winston Churchill Boulevard and what was then Middle Road, now the QEW (Heritage Mississauga).

How wide your driveway can be under the 2024 by-law

Mississauga's By-law 0182-2024 sets the maximum driveway width by lot frontage: 3.0 m, 6.0 m or 8.5 m. Measure your frontage first, because the limit comes from the lot and not from the garage.

Less than 6.0 m3.0 m
6.1 m – 16.9 m6.0 m

The table is shown as the City prints it, and it has no row for a frontage between 6.0 m and 6.1 m. If your lot falls in that range, check with the City before anything is drawn. Read the by-law PDF.

On a Sheridan street of double-garage homes, replacing a driveway at its present width is the simple case. Going wider means checking the frontage and, if the new edge reaches the boulevard, asking the City for a curb cut (access modification). The City says no building permit is needed to widen, but the width must meet the zoning by-law (City of Mississauga). More in driveway widening.

Rebuilding a driveway that is decades old

Many Sheridan homes date from the 1960s to the 1990s, so the driveway out front may be the original or a second-generation surface. We do not assume what is under it; a site visit and a test dig show the base. Moving to interlock changes the job in six steps.

  1. Request locates. Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) asks you to contact it at least 5 business days before a single-address project, and no digging starts until every notified infrastructure owner has responded.
  2. Remove and excavate. The old asphalt or concrete comes out, and the soil is dug to the planned depth.
  3. Lay geotextile and the base. Granular A goes in compacted lifts, 6 to 8 inches in total.
  4. Screed the bedding. About 1 inch of bedding sand is levelled to grade.
  5. Set the pavers. 80 mm vehicle pavers go down in the chosen pattern, with edge restraint along the borders.
  6. Sweep in polymeric sand. The surface is compacted, the joints are filled and the site is cleaned up, with a 2% fall away from the garage.

Country Reno puts a full installation at five to eight working days. If you want a heated driveway, the tubing has to go in at the base stage.

Split-levels, front steps and the walk to the door

Many Sheridan homes are split-levels and bungalows with a short run of steps at the entrance. Plan the driveway, the front walk and the steps together, so grades and borders line up where they meet.

A matching border can carry from the driveway to the walkway, and the landing can be rebuilt in the same paver. Our page on walkways and steps covers that side of the job. If only one section by the garage has sunk, interlock repair may be all you need.

Patterns and borders that suit a brick front

Brick homes carry a lot of colour already, so the paver is usually the quiet partner. Herringbone, basketweave and running bond are all used on driveways. A contrasting border or soldier course frames the field, and a charcoal or grey field sits well against red brick.

FAQ

Sheridan driveway questions

What does an interlock driveway cost in Sheridan?

Our typical GTA range is $25–$45 per sq ft installed, so most 2-car driveways land between $15,000 and $27,000 before HST. Removal of the old surface, base depth, soil and the paver you pick move the number. You get an exact written quote after a free site visit.

How wide can a Sheridan driveway be?

Under Mississauga's By-law 0182-2024, the limit depends on lot frontage: 3.0 m for less than 6.0 m of frontage, 6.0 m for 6.1–16.9 m, and 8.5 m at 17.0 m or more. Measure your frontage first, then check the City's residential driveway page for any site-specific exception.

Do I need City approval to widen my driveway?

Mississauga says no building permit is needed to widen a driveway, but the new width must meet the zoning by-law. If the wider part reaches the boulevard or the curb, you need to request a curb cut (access modification) from the City before work starts.

How long will my driveway be out of use?

Plan on about 5–8 working days on site once utility locates are back. Ontario Dig Authority asks for at least 5 business days' notice on a single address. The work runs in order: removal and excavation, the base in compacted layers, laying and cutting, then joint sand and clean-up. Rain and intricate patterns add days.

Are 60 mm pavers strong enough for a driveway?

For a driveway, use 80 mm (about 3⅛ inches) pavers rated for vehicles. 60 mm units are the usual thickness for patios and walkways. The thicker paver spreads the load of cars turning in and out. Ask for the paver thickness and vehicle rating in your written quote.

Can you fix just the sunken part near my garage?

Often, yes. Interlock can be lifted, the base topped up and recompacted, and the same pavers relaid, so a sunken strip does not mean a new driveway. A site visit shows whether the base failed in one spot or across the whole driveway. See interlock repair.

Is interlock cheaper than a concrete driveway?

Not up front. Green Building Canada puts a GTA concrete driveway at about $12–$20 per sq ft on average, below the $15–$25 (Ultrascape) and $22–$42 (Country Reno) interlock ranges in the table above. What interlock offers instead is repair in sections: pavers lift out and go back, so a sunken or stained patch is fixed without breaking out the slab.

Can interlock handle Mississauga winters?

Yes, when the base is built for it. Country Reno says a properly installed interlock driveway lasts 25 to 30 years in Toronto, on 6 to 8 inches of compacted Granular A with geotextile and about 1 inch of bedding sand. The joints let the surface flex, and a 2% slope keeps meltwater moving away.
