Overview

A driveway is a foundation job with pavers on top

Look at an interlock driveway that has failed and you rarely find broken pavers. You find ruts where tires run, a dip by the garage, or edges that have rolled into the lawn. Each of those starts below the surface, in gravel that was too thin, never compacted properly, or left without anything to stop it spreading sideways.

So the part of the quote worth reading closest is the excavation depth and the base, not the paver catalogue. On a typical two-car driveway we dig out 10 to 14 inches, bring in crushed gravel, and compact it layer by layer before any bedding goes down. The paver choice comes after that: herringbone for strength where cars turn, a soldier course to frame the edges, colours picked against your brick in daylight. Get the order right and the surface stays flat for decades, with any damaged paver easy to swap out on its own.

How we do it

  1. Remove and excavate

The old driveway comes out and we dig down 10–14 inches, hauling everything away.

  2. Build the base

8–12 inches of crushed gravel, laid and compacted in lifts.

  3. Lay the pattern

Bedding, pavers, borders and cuts, with edge restraint on every side.

  4. Finish

Polymeric sand swept in and set, then a final compaction and cleanup.

Interlock costs more on day one but is the only surface you can repair invisibly, which is why it holds its value. See the full cost guide for sources.

Widening your driveway: Mississauga and Toronto rules

In Mississauga, By-law 0182-2024 caps driveway width by lot frontage: 3.0 m under 6.0 m of frontage, 6.0 m for 6.1–16.9 m, and 8.5 m for 17.0 m or more. In Toronto, including Etobicoke, boulevard and curb work needs a Transportation Services permit and front-yard parking is regulated under Municipal Code Chapter 918.

Check your lot's width limit or see our driveway widening service.

Patterns, borders and colours

Herringbone is the usual choice for driveways because the interlocking angles resist the turning and braking of cars. Running bond suits walkways and long, narrow driveways, and large-format slabs give a modern look on lighter-traffic areas. A contrasting soldier-course border frames the driveway and hides the cuts at the edges. We bring samples to the site visit so you can see colours against your brick or stone.

Built for Ontario winters

Frost, road salt and plows are what destroy driveways here. A deep, well-drained base stops frost heave, interlock flexes with the ground instead of cracking, and polymeric sand keeps water out of the joints. If a paver ever gets damaged by a plow, it can be lifted and replaced on its own.

Walkways, steps and front entrances

Most driveway jobs include the front walk. Tying the walkway, landing and steps into the driveway in one design, on the same base, gives the front of the house one clean look and avoids two different paver colours meeting at the door.

Driveway landscaping: the strip beside the pavers

A new driveway changes how the whole front yard reads, so it pays to plan the edges at the same time. The narrow strip between the driveway and the property line is where most front yards look unfinished: worn grass, a sunken edge, salt-burnt plants. We usually suggest one of three treatments there: a planted bed with salt-tolerant grasses set back from the plow line, a clean band of sod laid on fresh topsoil so it sits flush with the pavers, or a short border of the same paver that steps into the front walk.

In Toronto, including Etobicoke, the zoning by-law also requires part of the front yard to stay soft landscaping, so a driveway can't simply be paved edge to edge. We sketch the planting and the hard surface together at the site visit, which keeps the design inside the rules and avoids a second visit for planting later.

Comparing quotes?

Ask every contractor these four questions.

Two quotes that differ by thousands are often not quoting the same job. The answers show whether they are. Ontario's consumer guidance suggests getting at least three written estimates.

  1. How deep is the excavation, and how thick is the compacted base?
  2. What edge restraint and joint sand will you use?
  3. Is removal, disposal and grading included?
  4. Does the price include HST?

How we build it

The details that make it last.

Base built to depth

The base, not the paver, is what decides whether a driveway lasts. We never skimp on it.

Borders and patterns

Herringbone, running bond or large-format, with a contrast soldier course.

Walkways and entrances

Front walks, landings and side paths tied into the driveway in one design.

Heated driveway option

Hydronic snow-melt under the pavers, installed with a specialist heating partner.

FAQ

Before you replace your driveway

How much do interlocking driveways cost?

It depends on size, site and materials. Typical GTA projects run around $25–$45 per sq ft installed for most driveways. Most 2-car driveways land between $15,000 and $27,000. We give you an exact written quote after a free site visit.

How long does an interlocking driveway take?

Most two-car driveways take 3–5 working days: one to remove and excavate, one to two for base, and one to two to lay, cut and finish.

Is interlock better than asphalt?

Interlock costs more up front but lasts far longer, doesn't crack from freeze-thaw, and can be repaired paver by paver. Asphalt needs resealing and usually replacement in 15–20 years.

Can you make my driveway wider?

Often yes, within your municipality's zoning limits. Any work in the city boulevard or a new curb cut needs city approval, which we check before quoting.

Do you repair sinking or uneven interlock?

Yes. When the problem is a local dip, rutting or a lifted edge, we take up that section, rebuild and re-compact the base, and relay the same pavers so the repair blends in. If the whole driveway is moving, a full rebuild on a proper base is usually the better value, and we'll tell you which one you need.

Will interlock shift after winter?

Not when the base is built to depth. Frost heave happens when water sits in a thin or poorly compacted base and freezes. An 8–12 inch compacted gravel base drains that water away, so the surface stays flat through freeze-thaw.

How soon can I park on a new interlock driveway?

Usually the next day. Pavers don't need to cure like concrete; we only wait for the polymeric sand in the joints to set.

How do I stop weeds between pavers?

Polymeric sand locks the joints and keeps most weeds out. Topping up worn joints every few years and keeping soil off the surface does the rest.

Can I salt and plow an interlock driveway?

Yes. Use a plow or shovel with a rubber edge if you can, and avoid piling salty snow on planting beds next to the driveway.

How thick should driveway pavers be?

For areas that carry cars, 80 mm pavers are the usual recommendation; 60 mm pavers are common on walkways and patios. A thicker paver doesn't replace a proper base, but it resists cracking and rocking under turning tires.

Do I need a permit to replace a driveway at the same size?

Generally not, when the new driveway sits in the same footprint on your own property. A permit or City approval comes in when you widen it, change the curb cut, or work in the boulevard between the sidewalk and the road.
