Finished herringbone interlocking driveway with a soldier-course border in front of a stone house

Interlocking Driveways in Mineola

With no sidewalk between your driveway and the road, the edge detail is what people see first.

Typical GTA range: $25–$45 per sq ft installed for most driveways. Most 2-car driveways land between $15,000 and $27,000. Price your driveway in 30 seconds

Local know-how

Where the driveway meets the road

Between the QEW and Port Credit, this neighbourhood kept a semi-rural feel that most of Mississauga lost decades ago: big lots, tall trees and many streets with no sidewalk at all. The driveway simply runs to the edge of the road. That's charming until you look closely at older driveways, where the last metre has crumbled into gravel and grass from cars swinging in and plows scraping past.

On a new interlock driveway, that edge gets built like a structure. The excavation and base carry all the way to the road, a heavier border course runs across the end, and a solid edge restraint keeps the field pavers from creeping outward. The border should finish flush with the road surface so a plow blade rides over it instead of catching it. Where the entrance itself is being reshaped, we confirm with the City first, since the strip next to the pavement is part of the road allowance.

Many of Mineola's original bungalows have been replaced with custom homes, and those houses usually want the driveway, front walk and steps designed together rather than added in stages. Big lots also mean big trees near the road, so root protection is part of the layout from the start. The width cap in By-law 0182-2024 still applies: on a frontage of 17 m or more the maximum is 8.5 m, and narrower lots get less. On these streets a driveway that leaves plenty of green on either side suits the setting anyway.

Getting the road edge right

  • Set the end border flush with the road so plow blades ride over it.
  • Carry the full base depth right out to the pavement edge.
  • Note where water runs along the road and keep it out of the driveway.
  • On a rebuild, design the walk and steps with the driveway.

FAQ

Mineola questions.

Why does the end of my driveway keep breaking up?

Without a curb or sidewalk, the last section takes turning tires, plows and frost with nothing holding it. A border course on a full-depth base with edge restraint stops the spreading.

Can the driveway flare wider where it meets the road?

The land next to the pavement belongs to the City's road allowance, and changes to the entrance need its approval. We confirm what Mississauga allows before designing the flare.

Do custom home builders usually include the driveway?

Some do, some leave it to the owner. Either way, designing driveway, walk and steps together means the finished heights match the front door and the grade drains away from the house.
