Landscaping unit converter: metric to imperial for yard jobs

Canadian plans are metric; suppliers often sell in square feet, cubic yards and tonnes. Convert between them with yard-sized examples.

Enter a value and pick the conversion.

Length, area and volume conversions are exact. Tonnes ↔ cubic yards depends on the material; your supplier's figure wins.

Why yard jobs mix units

In the GTA, surveys, zoning by-laws and City rules are metric: Mississauga caps driveway width at 3.0, 6.0 or 8.5 m by lot frontage. Paver and sod suppliers, contractors and most cost guides still work in square feet. Bulk stone and soil come by the cubic yard or by the tonne. One project can touch all three, so a quick, exact conversion saves ordering mistakes.

Yard-sized examples

  • A 2-car driveway of about 600 sq ft is 55.7 m². At 6.0 m wide, the Mississauga limit for most detached lots, it is about 9.3 m long.
  • A 50 m² backyard is 538 sq ft of sod, a little over one 500 sq ft pallet.
  • Ten cubic metres of fill is 13.1 cubic yards, roughly the base for a 1-car driveway dug a foot deep.

Tonnes and cubic yards

Weight and volume only convert through the material's density. Crushed base stone weighs roughly 1.1 to 1.3 tonnes per cubic yard depending on the stone and moisture; topsoil and mulch weigh much less. Ask the supplier which figure they use, pick it in the converter, and round your order up.

Need the quantities themselves? Use the gravel base calculator, the paver calculator, the sod calculator or the mulch and soil calculator.

Questions about this tool

How many square feet are in a square metre?

One square metre is 10.764 square feet, so multiply square metres by 10.764. A 50 m² backyard is about 538 sq ft, and a 2-car driveway of 600 sq ft is about 55.7 m². Contractors and sod suppliers in the GTA usually quote in square feet, while surveys use metres.

How do I convert cubic metres to cubic yards?

Multiply by 1.308. Ten cubic metres is about 13.1 cubic yards. To go the other way, multiply cubic yards by 0.765. For bags, remember one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, which is about thirteen 2 cu ft bags of mulch or soil.

How many tonnes of gravel are in a cubic yard?

Roughly 1.1 to 1.3 tonnes for crushed base stone, depending on the stone and how wet it is. Lighter materials like topsoil and mulch weigh much less per cubic yard. Ask your supplier for the figure for their exact material before ordering by weight.

Why do Ontario landscapers use square feet?

Habit and supply chains: pavers, sod and most published cost guides in Canada are sold and priced per square foot, even though surveys, zoning and building rules are metric. That is why a Mississauga driveway rule reads 6.0 m while the quote for paving it reads in square feet.
