Driveway Widening & Extensions in Mississauga & the GTA

Wider driveways and parking pads in interlock, designed within your city's width limits so there's no by-law trouble later.

Typical GTA range: $25–$45 per sq ft of new interlock. Widening an existing interlock driveway to match, or replacing the whole surface, is quoted after a site visit. Check your max width

Overview

Room for a second car, within the rules

The request is nearly always the same: two cars, a driveway built for one, and someone shuffling vehicles every morning. The answer depends less on the pavers than on your lot. In Mississauga, frontage decides the maximum width; in Toronto, front-yard parking and any change at the curb are regulated separately. Get that wrong and a new extension can attract an order to remove it.

So a widening job with us starts with a tape measure and the by-law. We measure frontage, the existing driveway and the distance to the side lot line, check for exception zones and earlier variances, and look at whether the extra width is better near the house, at the street, or as a flared shape that only widens where the cars park. The new section is then dug out and built up on a base dug and compacted to full driveway depth, so it settles at the same rate as the old one and doesn't leave a ridge where the two meet.

What's included

What a widening project includes

  • Frontage measurement and a zoning check before design
  • Excavation and an 8–12" compacted granular base under the new section
  • Matching or contrasting pavers, borders and edge restraint, tied into the existing surface

Free on-site estimate and a clear written quote before any work starts.

How we do it

  1. Measure and check

We measure frontage and the current driveway, and check zoning, exception zones and boulevard rules.

  2. Design within the limit

We lay out the widest legal driveway and how it ties into walks, steps and planting.

  3. Excavate and build the base

The new area is dug out and built up with compacted gravel in lifts, level with the existing base.

  4. Lay, tie in and finish

Pavers and borders go down, the join is cut clean, and polymeric sand locks it all together.

Widen at the garage or at the curb?

Where the extra width goes changes both the rules and the cost. Widening near the house, where the cars actually park, often gives you the space you need without touching the curb cut or the City boulevard. That keeps the job on your own property and avoids a permit for road-allowance work. A driveway that flares from a single-width apron at the street to a double width at the garage is a common, tidy solution.

Widening all the way to the street means a wider curb cut and work in the boulevard, which needs municipal approval in Mississauga and a Transportation Services permit in Toronto, and in some cases relocating a hydrant, pole or tree is simply not possible. We show you both layouts at the site visit, with what each one needs approved, so you can choose with the trade-offs in front of you.

How we build it

The details that make it last.

Designed to the limit

In Mississauga the maximum width depends on lot frontage: 3.0 m, 6.0 m or 8.5 m. We design to what your lot allows.

Same base as a new driveway

The extension gets full-depth excavation and compaction, so it never sinks away from the old section.

Blends or contrasts on purpose

We match the existing paver where it's still made, or use a deliberate border so the join looks designed.

Boulevard work checked

Any change to the curb cut or the City boulevard needs City approval, and we confirm it first.

  1. A wide photo

From the street or the far side of the yard, so we see the whole area.

  2. A rough size

Length and width in feet. Pacing it out is fine: one big step is about 3 ft.

  3. What you'd like

Replace, widen, level, plant, or just "make it look better".

FAQ

Widening a driveway: questions before you start

How much does driveway widening cost?

It depends on size, site and materials. Typical GTA projects run around $25–$45 per sq ft of new interlock. Widening an existing interlock driveway to match, or replacing the whole surface, is quoted after a site visit. We give you an exact written quote after a free site visit.

How wide can my driveway be in Mississauga?

Under By-law 0182-2024 the maximum is 3.0 m on lots under 6.0 m of frontage, 6.0 m on lots 6.1–16.9 m wide, and 8.5 m on lots 17.0 m or wider. Lots with an exception zone or an earlier approved variance keep the larger allowance.

What if I want it wider than the limit?

You'd need a minor variance from Mississauga's Committee of Adjustment, which takes weeks to months. Most homeowners get what they need within the limit, for example by widening near the garage.

Can you match my existing pavers?

Often, if the paver line is still made. If not, a contrasting border between old and new usually looks better than a near-match.

Is it worth replacing the whole driveway instead?

If the existing driveway is old asphalt or uneven interlock, yes in most cases. One new surface on one base looks better and avoids a visible seam where old and new meet.

Do you widen driveways in Etobicoke and Toronto?

Yes, but the rules differ. Toronto regulates front-yard parking under Municipal Code Chapter 918, and boulevard work needs a Transportation Services permit, so we check before quoting.

Does widening my driveway affect my front lawn requirements?

It can. Toronto's zoning requires part of the front yard to remain soft landscaping, and Mississauga's width limits indirectly preserve front-yard green space. We design the widening so the remaining lawn or planting still meets the rule.
