Interlocking Driveways in Markland Wood

Sixty years of patched asphalt comes out, and a driveway built for two cars and a Toronto winter goes in.

Typical GTA range: $25–$45 per sq ft installed for most driveways. Most 2-car driveways land between $15,000 and $27,000. Price your driveway in 30 seconds

Local know-how

Wide 1960s frontages, worn-out asphalt

Drive along Markland Drive or Mill Road and you see the same thing at the end of many driveways: asphalt resurfaced two or three times over the original, with a crown in the middle and edges crumbling into the lawn. Each overlay raised the surface a little. Some driveways now sit higher than the garage slab or the walkway beside them, so water runs the wrong way every spring. Before any interlock goes down, all of those layers come out, and the old gravel underneath is tested rather than trusted.

The upside of a 1960s subdivision is room. Side-splits and bungalows here generally sit on lots wide enough that a double driveway and a separate front walk fit without crowding the lawn, which isn't true of much older Toronto. That width also gives snow somewhere to go. We like to leave a planting strip or a soft edge on at least one side, because a driveway that runs fence to fence leaves shovelled snow, and the salt in it, piled against the house or the neighbour's hedge.

Markland Wood is in the City of Toronto, so Mississauga's width table doesn't apply even though the city line is only as far away as the creek. What matters here is the boulevard. The strip between your property line and the road belongs to the City, and changing the curb cut or the apron across it needs a permit from Transportation Services. Toronto's zoning also expects part of every front yard to stay soft landscaping, so a wider driveway is drawn with that in mind. If you'd rather never shovel again, a heated system can go under new pavers through a specialist partner, and it has to be decided before the base is built.

Before the excavator shows up

  • Count the asphalt layers at the edge; thick overlays add removal time and disposal weight.
  • Decide where shovelled snow will be piled before the width is fixed.
  • Check that the garage slab and front step line up with the new finished height.
  • Ask about heated pavers now, not after the base is compacted.

FAQ

Markland Wood questions.

My asphalt has been resurfaced several times. Can you lay interlock over it?

No. Pavers need a compacted granular base, and old asphalt cracks and traps water underneath. Every layer comes out, which often brings the driveway back down to a height that meets the garage and walkway properly.

Does the City of Toronto have to approve a wider driveway on my lot?

Work on your own land is a zoning question, including how much of the front yard stays green. Anything that touches the curb or the City boulevard needs a Transportation Services permit. We sort out which applies during the site visit.

Will interlock stand up to salt and snowplows?

Concrete pavers handle freeze-thaw well because the joints let them move. Use salt in moderation, and make the end of the driveway sturdy: a firm border and edge restraint resist the plow windrow and the shovel blade far better than a loose asphalt edge.
