Interlocking driveways in Erin Mills, Mississauga

An interlocking driveway in Erin Mills starts with a site visit and ends with a written, itemized quote. We write the quote, sign the contract and send the invoice. Our own crew builds to the base and drainage spec in that quote.

What decides the price on a driveway here

Six things move the total more than the square footage does.

  • Removing the old asphalt or concrete.
  • Size, and how much of it is curved.
  • Pattern cuts and borders.
  • An 80 mm vehicle-rated paver instead of a 60 mm one.
  • Access for the excavator and trucks.
  • Drainage: Country Reno puts regrading or a French drain at $1,500 to $4,000 extra (Toronto figure).

The quote lists each one as its own line, so you can see what a border or a drain costs before you agree to it.

How wide can your driveway be?

It depends on lot frontage. Under 6.0 m, the limit is 3.0 m. From 6.1 to 16.9 m, it is 6.0 m. At 17.0 m or more, it is 8.5 m (By-law 0182-2024, Table 4.1.9A).

Less than 6.0 m3.0 m (9.8 ft)
6.1 m to 16.9 m6.0 m (19.7 ft)
17.0 m or greater8.5 m (27.9 ft)

A lot in an exception zone keeps any larger width its zone already allows. You do not need a building permit to widen a driveway, says the City (residential driveways), but changing the boulevard means a new curb cut. Plans to go wider are covered on our driveway widening page.

Homes that front Erin Mills Parkway: a Peel regional road

Erin Mills Parkway is Peel Regional Road 1, according to Peel’s list of regional roads. If your home fronts it, a new or changed driveway is a request to the Region, not the City.

Peel’s driveway request page lists what the Region requires, among other items.

  • A Road Occupancy Permit for any work inside its right-of-way.
  • A $5,000 mud-tracking security for residential work.
  • A site plan review.

If a lot borders both a regional road and a City road, Peel advises connecting the driveway to the City road. Replacing pavers in the existing footprint differs from adding a new access, so ask Peel first.

How an interlock driveway is built, step by step

The job takes five steps and, once digging starts, 5 to 8 working days (Country Reno).

  1. Site visit and a written, itemized quote.
  2. A locate request through Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call). It is free and goes in at least 5 business days before digging.
  3. Dig 10 to 14 inches below finished grade, then place Granular A in compacted lifts, at least 6 inches deep and 8 inches on poor subgrade, graded to at least 2% (¼ inch per foot).
  4. Lay the pavers, edge restraint and border.
  5. Sweep in polymeric sand, compact and clean up.

Each layer is drawn in the full layer-by-layer build.

Interlock, concrete or asphalt?

Interlock usually costs more up front. Plain concrete in the GTA averages $12 to $20 per sq ft (Green Building Canada, May 2026), against $15 to $25 for installed interlock (Ultrascape, market figure). Asphalt is cheapest to lay, at $6 to $12 per sq ft in Toronto, and needs resealing every 2 to 3 years (Country Reno, Toronto figure). Interlock’s case is looks and repair: one sunken paver is lifted and relaid on its own.

Patterns, colours and borders

Herringbone, basketweave and running bond are the usual choices, each with a different look on a long driveway.

Keeping pavers tight through the winters

A driveway on a full base lasts 25 to 30 years (Country Reno). Re-sand the joints every 7 to 10 years. Sealing, every 2 to 3 years, extends colour life but is optional.

A thin base is the usual cause of trouble. Country Reno says a poor base can show heaving and settlement within 3 to 5 winters. If a section has already sunk, see interlock repair and releveling.

Is interlocking cheaper than concrete?

Usually not up front. GTA plain concrete averages $12–$20 per sq ft (Green Building Canada, May 2026), against $15–$25 for interlock (Ultrascape, 2026). Asphalt runs $6–$12 in Toronto (Country Reno). Interlock can be lifted and relaid one section at a time, which concrete cannot. Our interlock vs concrete guide compares the two over the life of the driveway.

On a properly built base, 25 to 30 years is typical (Country Reno, Toronto). A poor base can show heaving and settlement within 3 to 5 winters. Joint sand is topped up every 7 to 10 years, and sealing, about every 2 to 3 years, is optional and extends colour life.

My house faces Erin Mills Parkway. Who approves a new driveway?

The Region of Peel, because the parkway is a regional road. Expect a Road Occupancy Permit, a $5,000 mud-tracking security for residential work and a site plan review. If your lot also touches a City street, Peel advises connecting the driveway there. Confirm the details with Peel before you plan the work.

It follows lot frontage: 3.0 m under 6.0 m, 6.0 m from 6.1 to 16.9 m, and 8.5 m at 17.0 m or more (By-law 0182-2024). Lots in exception zones keep any larger allowed width. Widening needs no building permit, but a boulevard change needs a curb cut.

How long will the work take, and do I need to call for locates?

Typically 5 to 8 working days once digging starts (Country Reno). Locates are free through Ontario Dig Authority, formerly Ontario One Call, and must be requested at least 5 business days before digging, so book early. Weather and extra drainage work can add time.
