Overview

Mowing and lawn care on a steady schedule

Most lawn problems in the GTA trace back to two habits: cutting too short and cutting too rarely. Scalped grass dries out in July, lets light reach weed seeds and spends its energy regrowing blades instead of roots. Long gaps between cuts mean taking off half the plant at once, which stresses it just as badly.

Our mowing visits keep your lawn at about 3 inches, on a regular weekly or every-other-week schedule through the season, with edges trimmed along walks, beds and the driveway and clippings blown off hard surfaces. Around the mowing we add what a lawn on clay needs to stay thick: a feeding schedule timed to spring and fall growth, core aeration where the soil has packed down, and overseeding to fill thin spots before weeds claim them. A dense lawn is the best weed control there is, and in Ontario it's most of the weed control you're allowed.

How we do it

  1. Mow high

We cut at about 3 inches so grass shades out weeds and holds moisture.

  2. Feed on schedule

Fertilizer is timed to Ontario's growing season, spring through fall.

  3. Fix thin spots

Bare and thin areas are overseeded before weeds move in.

  4. Aerate

Core aeration relieves compacted clay so water and nutrients reach the roots.

Mowing height and the one-third rule

Cool-season grasses, which make up almost every Ontario lawn, are healthiest kept at roughly 2.5 to 3.5 inches. We set our mowers at about 3 inches for most of the season and raise them a little in midsummer heat. Taller blades shade the soil, keep roots cooler and crowd out crabgrass, which needs light to sprout.

The other rule is never to remove more than a third of the blade in one cut. In May and June, when grass grows fastest, that can mean weekly visits; in a dry August, every two weeks may be plenty. We sharpen blades regularly, because a dull blade tears the tips and leaves the lawn looking grey and ragged a day later. Clippings are usually mulched back in, which returns nutrients to the soil without causing thatch.

Weed control under Ontario's pesticide rules

Ontario's cosmetic pesticides ban, under the Pesticides Act and O. Reg. 63/09, stops most conventional weed killers from being used on residential lawns and gardens. Only a short list of lower-risk products can be used for cosmetic purposes. That changes what lawn care can honestly promise: no service can spray a dandelion-free lawn into existence the way it was done twenty years ago.

What does work is building turf thick enough that weeds have no room. That means mowing high, feeding in spring and fall, overseeding thin areas, and aerating compacted soil so grass roots can go deep. Persistent weeds get dug out by hand. It takes a season or two to show, but the result lasts longer than any spray did, and it keeps your lawn within the rules.

Aeration and overseeding on clay soil

Clay packs down under foot traffic, mowers and snow piles until water runs off instead of soaking in and roots stall a few inches below the surface. Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, opening channels for air, water and fertilizer. The plugs break down on the surface within a week or two.

Aeration is the best moment to overseed, because the seed falls into those holes and makes direct contact with soil. Late August to mid-September is the strongest window in the GTA: warm soil, cooler nights and fewer weeds competing. Spring overseeding works as well with steady watering. Our lawn weather forecast shows which days suit seeding, mowing and fertilizing in your town, so the work lands on the right day.

FAQ

Lawn mowing and care: questions we hear

How much does lawn care cost?

It depends on size, site and materials. Typical GTA projects run around $45–$65 per cut, typical detached lot. Season packages, aeration and overseeding are quoted separately. We give you an exact written quote after a free site visit.

How high should grass be cut?

About 3 inches for most Ontario lawns. Taller grass shades out weeds and holds moisture.

When is the best time to overseed?

Late summer to early fall, when soil is warm and nights are cooler. Spring works too with steady watering.

Do you bag the clippings?

Usually not. Mulched clippings return nutrients to the lawn. We bag them when the grass is long or wet.

When does mowing season start and end in the GTA?

Usually from late April or early May, once the grass is actively growing, through late October or early November. The last cut of the year can be a little shorter to reduce snow mould.

Can you mow if I'm away for the summer?

Yes. Scheduled visits run whether you're home or not, as long as gates are unlocked and the yard is clear of toys and hoses on mowing day.
