Overview

Regular garden care, season by season

A new garden is at its best only if someone keeps at it. Weeds left for three weeks in June will set seed for next year, a shrub sheared at the wrong time skips a year of flowers, and beds without fresh edges blur into the lawn by midsummer.

Our maintenance visits are built around that calendar. In spring we clear out what winter left, cut back last year's perennials and grasses, and edge and mulch the beds. Through the growing season we come every week or two to weed, deadhead, tie up floppy stems and keep an eye on anything that looks stressed. In fall we cut back, clear leaves from the beds and tidy shrubs before the snow. You can book the full season or just the two cleanups, and the price per visit stays within the typical range below.

How we do it

  1. Spring cleanup

Clear winter debris, cut back perennials, edge beds and refresh mulch.

  2. Regular visits

Weeding, deadheading, light pruning and edging every one or two weeks through the season.

  3. Summer care

Keep beds tidy, spot-water new plants and stay ahead of weeds before they seed.

  4. Fall cleanup

Leaves out, perennials cut back, shrubs tidied, so the garden goes into winter healthy.

When to prune what: a GTA calendar

Timing matters more than technique for most shrubs. A simple rule: prune spring bloomers right after they flower, and summer bloomers before they start growing.

  • Late winter to early spring: summer-flowering shrubs such as panicle hydrangeas, potentilla and spirea that bloom on new wood; dead or crossing branches on most shrubs; ornamental grasses cut back before new shoots appear.
  • Right after flowering (May to June): lilacs, forsythia, magnolias and other shrubs that set next year's buds soon after blooming. Prune these in fall and you cut off next spring's flowers.
  • Late spring to early summer: a light trim on cedar hedges once the new growth has firmed up, and a second touch-up in midsummer if needed.
  • Late fall: mostly cleanup, not hard pruning. Heavy cuts this late can leave tender regrowth exposed to frost.

Fall cleanups and yard waste pickup

A fall cleanup does more than tidy. Clearing matted leaves off beds and lawn stops them smothering crowns and grass under the snow, and cutting back diseased foliage removes a source of next year's problems. Some perennials and grasses are worth leaving standing over winter, for seed heads that feed birds and stems that hold snow, and we'll leave those if you prefer.

Both Mississauga and Toronto collect yard waste on scheduled days from spring to late fall, in paper yard-waste bags or open rigid containers; plastic bags aren't accepted. Branches need to be cut to the length and bundled as your city sets out. On cleanup visits we bag and set out material to those rules for your collection day, or haul it away when the volume is more than the curb can take.

Mulch and edging, done properly

A crisp edge and fresh mulch are what make a bed look cared for, and they do real work too. We cut a clean spade edge between lawn and bed so grass can't creep in, then spread shredded mulch about two to three inches deep. That depth holds moisture through dry spells and blocks most weed seeds from reaching light.

More isn't better. Mulch piled against stems and trunks, the so-called mulch volcano, keeps bark wet and invites rot and pests, so we pull it back a few inches from every stem. Old mulch that has broken down into soil can simply be topped up each spring rather than replaced. Dyed mulches look bright for a season but fade, so we usually suggest natural shredded bark that weathers to a soft brown.

FAQ

Garden upkeep: common questions

How much does garden maintenance cost?

It depends on size, site and materials. Typical GTA projects run around $80–$120 per visit, typical garden. Seasonal packages are available for regular weekly or bi-weekly visits. We give you an exact written quote after a free site visit.

How often should a garden be maintained?

Most gardens look their best with a visit every one to two weeks from May to October, plus spring and fall cleanups.

Do you remove leaves in the fall?

Yes. Fall cleanups include leaf removal from beds and lawn, cutting back perennials and tidying shrubs.

Can I book only spring and fall cleanups?

Yes. Many homeowners book the two seasonal cleanups and handle the rest themselves.

Do you water gardens between visits?

Watering is best done by the homeowner or an irrigation timer, since plants need it more often than a weekly visit. On visits we spot-water new or stressed plants and let you know if the garden needs more.

Can maintenance include a garden you didn't plant?

Yes. We take on existing gardens, start with a cleanup to reset the beds, and tell you which plants are worth keeping or moving.
