Three example projects

Front yard: new 2-car driveway and walk. A 600 sq ft herringbone driveway at $32–$45 per sq ft is about $19,000–$27,000, and a 4 × 20 ft front walk adds about $2,000–$3,600. Total: roughly $21,000–$30,600 before HST.

Backyard: level the slope and re-lawn it. A 30 ft block wall, 3 ft high (90 sq ft of face), is about $4,000–$7,000. Sodding 1,000 sq ft behind it adds $2,000–$4,000, and 100 ft of wood privacy fence $5,500–$9,500. Total: roughly $11,500–$20,500.

A season of upkeep. Weekly mowing from late April to October is about 26 cuts, or $1,170–$1,690 at $45–$65 a cut. Garden maintenance every two weeks, about 13 visits at $80–$120, adds $1,040–$1,560.

What moves the price

  1. What has to come out. Old asphalt, thick concrete, rotted timber walls and dead lawn all cost time and disposal.
  2. Soil and water. Much of Mississauga sits on clay. Wet clay needs a deeper base under pavers and real drainage behind walls.
  3. Access. A machine that fits down the side yard saves days of hand digging.
  4. Permits and rules. Walls over 1 m beside public property need an engineer and a permit; driveway width is capped by lot frontage under By-law 0182-2024.
  5. Size. Bigger jobs cost less per square foot, because setup and removal are spread over more area.

Getting fair quotes

Ask every contractor the same questions: how deep is the base, what drainage goes in, is removal included, and is HST included. Two quotes that differ by thousands are often not quoting the same job. Ontario's consumer guidance suggests getting at least three written estimates, and under the Consumer Protection Act a contractor can't charge more than 10% above an estimate without your agreement.

FAQ

How much does landscaping cost in Mississauga?

It depends on the project. Our typical GTA ranges are $25–$45 per sq ft for an interlocking driveway, $45–$110 per sq ft of face for a retaining wall, $2–$4 per sq ft for sod and $55–$95 per linear foot for a wood fence, before HST. A 2-car driveway lands between $15,000 and $27,000.

What is the most expensive part of landscaping?

Usually hardscaping: driveways, walls and walkways, because most of the cost is underground in excavation, compacted base and drainage. Planting, sod and maintenance cost far less per square foot. On a sloped lot, retaining walls and grading can be the biggest line, especially if a wall needs engineering.

Is it cheaper to landscape in fall or spring?

Prices don't change much by season, but timing does. Fall and winter enquiries get measured and quoted before the spring rush, so they get the earliest start dates. Sod and planting go in well in early fall, and hardscaping can be built any time the ground isn't frozen.

Do landscaping prices include HST?

No. Typical ranges, including ours, are before 13% HST, so add 13% to compare with a final quote. A written quote from us shows HST on its own line, along with removal, base depth and drainage, so you can compare it line by line with other estimates.
