Interlock or concrete for a GTA driveway? Short answer below, then cost, lifespan, salt and repairs, with sources.
Interlock costs more to install: about $15–$25 per sq ft in the GTA against $12–$20 for concrete (market figure, 2026). Interlock can be repaired paver by paver; concrete usually means slab replacement. Sources disagree on concrete lifespan, so compare quotes and base preparation, not just the surface.

How much does an interlock driveway cost compared with concrete?
Interlock runs about $15–$25 per sq ft installed in the GTA, and plain concrete about $12–$20. These are market figures from published 2026 guides, not quotes.
| Surface and source | Per sq ft | 400 sq ft | 600–800 sq ft (double) | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Interlock, Ultrascape | $15–$25 | $6,000–$10,000 | $9,000–$20,000 | Market figure |
| Interlock, Country Reno | $20–$35 | $8,000–$14,000 | $12,000–$28,000 | Toronto figure |
| Plain concrete, Green Building Canada | $12–$20 | $4,800–$8,000 | $7,200–$16,000 | Market figure |
| Removing an old surface, Ultrascape | $3–$6 | $1,200–$2,400 | $1,800–$4,800 | Market figure |
The size columns are our arithmetic from market ranges (600 sq ft at the low price, 800 sq ft at the high), not a quote. Removal is extra. Country Reno puts most double-car driveways at $18,000–$28,000. It also says Oakville and parts of Mississauga run 10–15% above its Toronto baseline. Size your own driveway in the driveway cost calculator to see which surface to price.
Cost per year of life: does the higher price pay back?
On these sources, concrete is cheaper per year; interlock’s case is repairability and freeze-thaw flex, not payback. Dividing each price by its lifespan gives a rough yearly cost, using two contractors’ own figures. This is our arithmetic from market ranges, not a quote.
| Surface and inputs | Pairing used | About per year |
|---|---|---|
| Interlock, Country Reno | $8,000 ÷ 30 years to $14,000 ÷ 25 years | $267–$560 |
| Concrete, Country Reno | $4,800 ÷ 25 years to $8,000 ÷ 20 years | $192–$400 |
| Concrete, 50-year figure (mixes sources) | $4,800 ÷ 50 to $8,000 ÷ 50 | $96–$160 |
Each pairing sets the low price against the longest life, and the high price against the shortest. It leaves out removal, sealing and repairs. Ranges overlap because base depth, access and finish change quotes. See interlock
How long does each surface last?
Country Reno gives interlock 25–30 years and concrete 20–25 years in Toronto conditions. Green Building Canada says concrete can last 50 years or more, so treat lifespan as a range.
Country Reno’s summary box gives interlock 25–35 years; its comparison table gives 25–30, the figure used here. Its summary box also shows $18–$40 per sq ft, beside the $20–$35 in its table. This guide cites the table.
Green Building Canada adds a caveat: concrete can crack if drainage or base preparation is inadequate. Ask every contractor how deep the base is and how it drains.
Which handles road salt and Ontario freeze-thaw?
The two sources describe different mechanisms, and both are worth hearing. Country Reno rates interlock excellent because it flexes with frost movement. It rates concrete poor because a slab fights that movement and eventually cracks.
Green Building Canada says properly air-entrained and sealed concrete resists salt damage and surface flaking. So ask a concrete contractor whether the mix is air-entrained and whether the slab will be sealed. Ask an interlock contractor about the base and edge restraint.
Repairs: lift and reset a paver or replace a slab?
Individual pavers can be lifted and reset for a few hundred dollars, according to Country Reno, while concrete needs full slab replacement.
If pavers have already sunk, see how a releveling job is done.
Upkeep: joint sand, sealing and what each costs
Both need upkeep, and the sources give different intervals.
- Interlock: polymeric joint sand every 5–10 years (Country Reno prints both 7–10 and 5–8); sealing about every 3 years.
- Concrete: Country Reno lists crack-filling every year plus sealing, with no interval. Green Building Canada says sealing is optional but commonly recommended every 5 to 10 years, at about $1–$2 per sq ft professionally (Canada-wide figure).
How long does the install take, and what about resale?
A properly installed interlock driveway takes five to eight working days (Country Reno). Our sources give no concrete install time, so ask for it in the quote.
Country Reno rates interlock’s resale impact highest and concrete’s moderate. That is one contractor’s rating, not appraisal data.

FAQ
Questions, answered.
How much more does an interlock driveway cost than concrete?
Up front, interlock costs more. Ultrascape puts installed interlock at $15–$25 per sq ft in the GTA; Green Building Canada puts plain concrete at $12–$20. On a 400 sq ft driveway that is about $6,000–$10,000 against $4,800–$8,000, before removing the old surface. Your written quote sets the real price.
Is interlocking cheaper than concrete?
Not to install, but repairs can favour interlock. Country Reno says individual pavers can be lifted and reset for a few hundred dollars, while concrete needs full slab replacement. Whether that evens out over time depends on your site and base, so compare the cost-per-year table above, not just the price per square foot.
How long does an interlock driveway last compared with concrete?
Country Reno gives interlock 25–30 years and concrete 20–25 years in Toronto conditions. Green Building Canada says concrete driveways can last 50 years or more. Sources disagree, so treat both as ranges. Green Building Canada adds that concrete can crack if drainage or base preparation is inadequate.
What is the average cost of an interlock driveway in Ontario?
Ultrascape puts the typical installed cost of an interlocking driveway in Ontario at $15–$25 per sq ft in 2026, depending on design, base depth and site conditions. For Toronto, Country Reno gives $20–$35. Removing an old surface adds about $3–$6 per sq ft (Ultrascape). These are market ranges, not quotes.
Which handles road salt and freeze-thaw better, interlock or concrete?
Country Reno rates interlock excellent because it flexes with frost movement, and concrete poor because a slab fights that movement and eventually cracks. Green Building Canada says properly air-entrained, sealed concrete resists salt damage and flaking. If you choose concrete, ask whether the mix is air-entrained and the slab will be sealed.
How long does an interlock driveway installation take?
Country Reno says a properly installed interlock driveway takes five to eight working days. The time goes into excavating, compacting the base, setting the pavers and locking the joints with polymeric sand. Your quote should give a schedule for your driveway, because size, access and weather change it.
Does interlock add more resale value than concrete?
Country Reno rates interlock’s resale impact as highest and concrete’s as moderate. That is one contractor’s guide, not appraisal data, so treat it as a general signal rather than a promise. For a number on your house, ask a local realtor how buyers in your neighbourhood view each surface.
